Although water may seem like a very simple thing to ordinary people, in fact it is one of the most complex substances in the universe. It is no coincidence that water is the basis of life! Water has many different properties, chemical and physical, all these properties cannot be listed even in ten volumes. We do not set ourselves such a grandiose task. Let’s just figure out what water is like.

From the point of view of science, it is customary to divide water into groups, subgroups, within which it is attributed to a certain type based on specific characteristics. In fact, different types of water are not always very different from each other. We will not go into the details of scientific terminology, and will simply divide water into the following simple “classes”:

  • contaminated water that should not be drunk by humans or animals,
  • untreated water from natural sources, which can quench your thirst if necessary, but causes problems with prolonged use,
  • purified water, which is filtered from mechanical impurities and is already relatively drinkable,
  • high-quality clean drinking water that can be consumed for a long time.

To verify the properties of water, you need to conduct a chemical analysis. It also does not hurt to test the water for various pathogenic bacteria. What are the impurities?

Water became the basis of all living things for a reason: it is an excellent solvent. That is why water contains a wide variety of impurities: these are organic compounds, metals, gases, and other liquids.

Water contains heavy metals such as iron. Iron water has a yellow or red tint. This water is not very pleasant to the taste, it leaves streaks on the heating devices of teapots and coffee makers.

High levels of calcium and manganese salts can often be found in water. This water is called “hard”. It can damage the heating elements of kettles and other equipment. Doctors do not advise taking such water for a long time: because of this, urolithiasis may develop.

In many natural water sources, so-called “heavy” water can be found. This is another interesting chemical property of water. The fact is that, as you know from the course of school chemistry, a water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. And in nature, hydrogen occurs in three forms: ordinary hydrogen and its two heavy isotopes. Heavy water comes from these isotopes. In nature, there is one “heavy” molecule for millions of ordinary water molecules. However, due to anthropogenic activities, water can accumulate underground, consisting mostly of “heavy” molecules. This water should not be consumed.

You can not drink water from sources that are near agricultural land. Usually, farmers treat their land with various substances to increase yields. Fertilizers penetrate the soil and accumulate in the water. Nitrite is a very harmful substance that can kill a person.

Most often, water flows from the Russian water supply system, suitable for constant use. However, you cannot trust the water supply 100%. Rust and pathogenic bacteria can form in pipes, water can be treated poorly, etc. So the most optimal source of clean water, the use of which is guaranteed not to lead to disease, is bottled water from the “Health Water” company.
